What Is a Health Light and How Does It Help With Neuropathy?

Our program at Advanced Care Specialists has been created to offer a solution to patients with peripheral neuropathy. There are a number of different causes of peripheral neuropathy such as diabetes, previous chemotherapy, drugs or other toxins. The most common symptoms are numbness, tingling, and burning in the feet and sometimes in the hands. It is common that these symptoms sometimes may be worse at night. As it progresses, patients may experience difficulty with balance.

Our medical team evaluates all the possible components of the nervous system that may be involved in peripheral neuropathy – motor and sensory – to help determine the severity. Based on these results, a specific, individualized treatment plan is developed.

The goals of the program are to help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, increase circulation in the hands and feet, and also help to improve lifestyle choices.

We have an extensive at home program for patients to continue care outside of the office. Our team finds that the most compliant patients with this part of the program have the best results.

We will perform an evaluation every 6 weeks to track the progress of each patient. Recently we re-tested a patient, who started with a 77% severity rating, and after 12 weeks, their rating reduced to 9%.

One part of the home program is infrared light boots. Each patient is given two boots, which surround their feet and also wrap around their calves, which emit infrared light. Patients wear the boots twice a day for 20 minutes. The infrared light helps to release nitric oxide which causes the vessels to vasodilate, or open. As a result, this will increase circulation to the feet, which often decreases pain.

Our team is excited to be able to offer peripheral neuropathy patients an option besides prescription medication. If you or someone you know has peripheral neuropathy, call our office 262-898-9000 to schedule an appointment today.
